Meet Karen
Photo of me demonstrating watercolour at the Canadian National Exhibition |
At first glance, my watercolour creations combine realistic clarity with a thoughtful serenity. They seem to glow with rich colour and inner light because, working with the primary pigments red, blue and yellow, I create a rainbow of colours specifically blended for each subject. There is a recurring theme in my paintings - what I think of as a 'contented solitude'.
My watercolour adventure began in 1986. Since then, my artistic vision has been revealed in over 400 original paintings. They are the fruits of an active lifestyle; my artwork is inspired by many lovely and intriguing sights seen in my own garden or while exploring on foot, on cross-country skis or by snowmobile, motorcycle or RV in North America and abroad. Over the years, I have created close to 100 custom portraits of homes and gardens. Since my husband John retired in 2005, we spend several months each year exploring new horizons and both of us are active community volunteers as well. In 2006 I began teaching perspective drawing and watercolour to adult students at weekly classes.
I grew up in Chalk River, a small Ontario village near Algonquin Park, and my love of the rugged, northern scenery of my childhood is evident in many of my landscape paintings. I was privileged to study all aspects of fine art at MacKenzie High School, including art history, architecture, sculpture, perspective drawing, life drawing, composition, colour theory and painting in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolour. As an adult, I refined my watercolour techniques at workshops taught by many regional and international artists.
My paintings have been exhibited in numerous juried and solo shows, winning many awards, and have been published in the international press. I am delighted to say that my artwork is displayed in private and corporate art collections in at least nineteen countries. My home is in historic Port Perry, Ontario, where my studio/gallery is open to the public year round by appointment, and from October to April for watercolour classes. Please phone 905-985-7418 or email me to arrange your visit - I look forward to seeing you! |
